Security forces have intensified patrols in the Bui District of Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State after an armed cattle rustling raid left 33 people dead, prompting widespread fear across surrounding communities.

The Kebbi State Police Command announced that it has deployed additional personnel and equipment to the district, working in concert with the Nigerian military and other security agencies. The reinforcements are conducting sustained area domination patrols aimed at stabilising the area, deterring further attacks and reassuring residents.

Police spokesperson SP Bashir Usman said the Command “deeply regrets the loss of thirty-three innocent lives” and extended condolences to the bereaved families and the wider Arewa community. He stressed that the new deployments are part of a broader strategy to restore confidence and prevent retaliatory violence.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that suspected Lakurawa militants crossed into Bui District from Gudu Local Government Area in neighbouring Sokoto axis, allegedly to rustle cattle. The incursion triggered a rapid mobilisation of residents from several villages, including Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal and Dan Mai Ago.

What began as a community response to protect livestock quickly escalated into a deadly confrontation. Many of the victims are believed to be local volunteers who attempted to repel the attackers without formal backing from security agencies.

The police have warned that confronting heavily armed criminal groups without coordinated support poses extreme danger. Usman urged residents to prioritise early reporting over direct engagement, calling on communities to use established security channels to flag suspicious movements or looming threats.

Earlier accounts from local sources suggested that at least 34 people might have been killed in a series of coordinated daytime raids across parts of Arewa LGA, sparking panic in Kebbi North Senatorial District and raising concerns about the reach and organisation of the attackers.

In response, joint security teams have launched targeted operations to track and apprehend the perpetrators, block potential escape routes and strengthen early warning systems in vulnerable border communities. Patrols have been increased on key access roads and around remote settlements considered soft targets.

The Command appealed for calm, urging residents to cooperate fully with security operatives, share credible intelligence and avoid actions that could inflame tensions. Authorities insist that restoring lasting peace in Bui District and its environs remains a top priority as operations continue.
