Anambra Adopts Pro-Rata Pay Policy to Curb Monday Sit-at-Home
The Anambra State Government has begun implementing a pro-rata salary payment system for civil servants as part of measures to discourage the long-running Monday sit-at-home practice across the state. The policy means workers will now be paid based on the number of days they report to work, with officials saying the decision is aimed at restoring productivity and easing the economic strain caused by repeated shutdowns.
Government sources say the sit-at-home order, observed mostly on Mondays, has led to significant revenue losses for the state, disrupted public services, and affected businesses, schools, and healthcare facilities. Authorities argue that while security concerns are being addressed through engagement with relevant agencies, workers must also play their part in keeping the state’s economy active.
Reactions to the policy have been mixed. Some residents and business owners welcomed the move, describing it as a practical step toward normalising economic activities. However, labour groups have urged the government to prioritise workers’ safety and dialogue, warning that fear, not unwillingness to work, remains the major reason many civil servants stay away on Mondays.
