Professor Anthony Kila, Director of the Commonwealth Institute of Advanced & Professional Studies, has made an eyebrow-raising proposal: political parties should hire psychiatrists! Yes, you heard it right! This shocking call comes as a response to the latest dramatic factional clashes within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),a clear reflection of the comedic dysfunction rampant in Nigeria's political landscape.
On a recent appearance on Arise News,a platform that thrives on controversies,Kila didn't hold back in his scathing criticism of the so-called political elites, labeling their behavior during the parallel meetings at the PDP's Wadata Plaza headquarters a “show of shame.” With scorn dripping from his words, he lamented the utter lack of civility and democratic norms on display. He declared, “What we saw there is a show of shame in terms of form and process,” suggesting that these elites are nothing more than clowns in a circus, failing to keep their act together.
Even more alarmingly, Kila pointed out the outrageous use of police officers as enforcers during these raucous clashes. He painted a vivid picture of power-hungry party members resorting to thuggery, with police officers acting as their personal bodyguards. “These people can deploy police officers as thugs, shouting, shoving, and fighting one another... they are people there to grab power,” he asserted, as if we needed more evidence of their outrageous antics.
In what can only be described as an audacious proposal, Kila suggested that political parties should appoint a “lead house psychiatrist” to tackle the psychological turmoil within their ranks. He claimed, “A lot of psychiatrists are not where they ought to be,” hinting at a dire need for mental health professionals to rein in the madness.
Kila warns that the PDP's chaos is merely the tip of the iceberg, as he believes similar dysfunctions plague all political parties in Nigeria. “This today is the PDP. It could be anybody tomorrow,” he cautioned, suggesting that the entire political system is akin to a poorly run asylum. Clearly, it’s not just a PDP problem; it’s a national crisis!
The recent uproar escalated when factional National Chairman Kabiru Turaki and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike showed up at different meetings, leading to a confrontation that required a heavy police presence. It’s the kind of reality show nobody wants to miss! And let's not forget the expulsion of high-profile members like Wike and former Ekiti Governor Ayo Fayose during a convention in Ibadan, more drama than a soap opera!
Kila’s insistence on constructive dialogue within political parties is a noble but perhaps futile endeavor. “Let us lay a preamble... it is because those who respect institutions must have an interest in a vibrant, stable opposition,” he stated, as if anyone in the political arena is even listening. Why bother with civility when chaos gets all the ratings?
Finally, addressing Wike’s audacious call for PDP support of an APC presidential candidate, Kila suggested a structured approach to political discussions. “If the party agrees, then they support him. If they disagree, that will be a minority report,” he explained, because who doesn’t love a good plot twist in this ongoing political drama?
As the political circus in Nigeria continues to unfold, Kila’s controversial insights add yet another layer to the chaotic spectacle.
