The Nigerian Army has restored calm to Danare community in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State after an unauthorised incursion by Cameroonian troops along the Nigeria–Cameroon border.
According to the Army, soldiers deployed to the Forward Operating Base in Danare moved swiftly after residents reported the presence of Cameroonian troops inside Nigerian territory. The Nigerian contingent immediately established contact with the appropriate military authorities in Cameroon, triggering a rapid de-escalation process.
Army officials said the engagement led to the withdrawal of the foreign troops in line with existing border protocols between both countries. No casualties were reported, and the situation was contained before it could spiral into a wider confrontation.
Preliminary findings by the Nigerian Army indicate that the incident arose from a dispute over levies on farmlands straddling the border between Danare in Nigeria and Dadi in Cameroon. Farmers in the area often cultivate plots that lie close to, or across, the poorly demarcated boundary, creating recurring tensions over taxation and control.
In response, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division has directed the Commander of 13 Brigade, Calabar, to engage directly with his Cameroonian counterpart. The planned meeting is expected to reinforce existing diplomatic and military cooperation, refine rules of engagement along the frontier and establish clearer communication channels to prevent similar incidents.
The Army stressed that the episode underscores the sensitivity of border communities in Cross River, where security forces from both countries are involved in joint efforts against cross-border crime, smuggling and insurgent movements. Officials say such cooperation makes strict adherence to agreed protocols essential.
The 82 Division reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and protecting residents in all border communities under its watch. Troops remain on heightened alert in and around Danare, with continuous monitoring of movements along the boundary.
Residents have been urged to remain calm, resume their normal activities and report any suspicious presence of armed groups to security agencies. The Army also appealed to community members to avoid spreading unverified information that could fuel panic or strain relations between Nigeria and Cameroon.
