I have always been overly curious since from childhood. I wanted to know new stuff; why is this like this? Who is this? What is this? How was this formed? My little brain always wondered.

The library was my haven, I would pore over books with illustrations fascinated by the new information I found within. My imagination wandered far and wide.
I learnt how to read and spell from watching cartoons with subtitles. The movies helped; Star Wars sent me to the galaxy, Harry Potter into the wizarding world, Pirates of the Caribbean on some swashbuckling tale, Indiana Jones and Sherlock to some adventure, Mission Impossible and James Bond into the world of espionage.

Some might say watching movies are a distraction, well yes, when they are abused. I see it as a source of information, a good story always fascinated me. I always watch with the hope of learning something new; a new word, a phrase or a terminology.

A bad movie for me is one that offered none. The story loses me and as long as it doesn’t pique my curiousity, it wasn’t up to par.

I once followed my mum to Terminus market for shopping. As we were going, I was just distracted by the buying and selling. The people who sold DVD film collection had me spellbound, I kept perusing over the collection fascinated by the ones I’ve seen and new titles. From the JET LI, Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan Kungfu collections to the Best of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Best of Jean-Claude Van Damme, Best of Bruce Willis and other action stars of the times collection.  I kept perusing.

Turned back and my mother was gone, I couldn’t find her. Other kids would start crying but me, I continued my perusing until much later when I knew i  needed to get home and I couldn’t go without her. I found a police station nearby and I met them that I had lost my mummy in the crowd. One offered to stay outside with me while I kept checking for familiar faces in the crowd.

My mum who thought I was behind her finished shopping before she remembered me. She started to trace her steps back. She couldn’t find me so she went to report at the station. I saw her first and exclaimed, ‘Mummy”

Normally the parent would embrace the child, the kind knock received from my mum ehnnnn. I felt people were watching so she couldn’t discipline how she wanted to right there and then.

She thanked the officers and off we went.  She was issuing threats from the market till we got home. I wasn’t bothered cause I had quite the experience at the film stand.

I couldn’t wait to regale my brothers with tales of my little adventure. I made sure they got an ear full with some jara.

I’ve been a cinephile ever since, intrigued by the cinema world.
