Newcastle United Requests Clarification On Denied Penalty Decision Against Chelsea - 1 month ago

Newcastle United has formally requested an explanation from Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) regarding a penalty decision that was not awarded during their 2-2 Premier League draw with Chelsea at St James’ Park. The club’s inquiry follows an incident in which appeals for a penalty were dismissed by both the on-field referee and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

The incident involved Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah and Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon. Video footage shows Chalobah making contact with Gordon inside the penalty area. Referee Andy Madley did not award a penalty, and VAR subsequently reviewed and upheld the on-field decision. Newcastle players and coaching staff expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome.

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe publicly questioned the decision, labeling it a clear penalty and requesting insight into the officials’ reasoning. The Premier League Match Centre later stated that Chalobah’s challenge was considered a side-to-side shielding action with the ball within playing distance, which was the basis for not awarding a penalty.

At the time of the incident, Newcastle led 2-1. Chelsea later equalized, resulting in a 2-2 draw. This outcome contributed to Newcastle’s record of dropping 13 points from winning positions this season, the highest in the Premier League. The club is currently 11th in the league table and has recorded only one away win during the current campaign.

Despite the result, Howe indicated that the team is making progress but acknowledged the need for greater consistency in securing wins. He emphasized the importance of building winning streaks, which has been a challenge for Newcastle this season.

The incident has contributed to ongoing discussions regarding the consistency and transparency of VAR decisions in the Premier League. Newcastle’s request for clarification is part of a broader trend among clubs seeking increased accountability and communication from match officials, particularly concerning penalty decisions.

As Newcastle prepares for upcoming matches, the club’s appeal remains a topic of interest among supporters and analysts. The organization is seeking a detailed response from PGMOL and potential improvements in officiating processes moving forward.
