The new Premier League season is here, and this could be one of the most unpredictable title races in years. Arsenal enter as defending champions, but Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United all have realistic ambitions of lifting the trophy. Current projections also put Arsenal ahead, with City and Liverpool among the closest challengers.
1. Arsenal — The team to beat 🔴
Arsenal have the biggest advantage of all: continuity.
Mikel Arteta remains in charge, the squad has matured together, and they are coming off a title-winning campaign. Their summer recruitment has also strengthened an already impressive squad, particularly with Bruno Guimarães adding quality and control to midfield.
The biggest question is whether Arsenal can handle the pressure of defending their crown. They no longer have the element of surprise.
Verdict: The strongest overall candidate. If their key players stay fit, Arsenal have every reason to retain the title. Opta currently gives them a 38% title probability.
2. Manchester City — Never write them off 🔵
City are entering a completely different era following Pep Guardiola's departure, with Enzo Maresca taking charge.
That alone creates uncertainty. But this is still Manchester City: enormous resources, elite players and the expectation to compete for trophies.
The concern is the transition. Losing influential figures such as Rodri and Bernardo Silva means City aren't simply replacing a manager—they are reshaping the identity of the team.
Verdict: Arsenal's biggest threat, but City may need time to fully adapt to the post-Pep era. Opta currently puts them at around 20.5%.
3. Liverpool — The wildcard 🔴
Liverpool could either be genuine title challengers or the biggest disappointment among the favourites.
They have quality throughout the squad, but Mohamed Salah's departure is enormous. Add a new manager in Andoni Iraola and there is considerable tactical and structural uncertainty.
The upside? Liverpool still possess enough quality to compete with anyone, and a successful transition could make them extremely dangerous.
Verdict: Massive potential, but too many variables to put them above Arsenal or City right now. Opta's current projection gives Liverpool about a 9.2% title chance.
4. Chelsea — The dark horse 🔵
Chelsea might be the most fascinating team in this conversation.
Xabi Alonso is now at the helm, Morgan Rogers arrived for a club-record fee, and Chelsea have the advantage of no European football, giving them more recovery time and fewer distractions.
But Chelsea need consistency. Their squad has talent, yet turning that talent into a title-winning machine over 38 matches is another matter.
Verdict: Don't be surprised if Chelsea are still in the title conversation around March. They are the dark horse of the five.
5. Manchester United — The comeback candidate 🔴
United are probably the hardest team to predict.
Michael Carrick's influence has given the club renewed optimism, while the addition of Youri Tielemans adds experience and technical quality to midfield. The question is whether last season's resurgence can become sustained excellence.
United also have to prove that they have the squad depth and consistency required to survive the long Premier League campaign.
Verdict: They have the potential to surprise, but they remain a step behind Arsenal and City until they prove they can maintain title-level consistency.
My ranking
1. Arsenal — Favourites
2. Manchester City — Biggest threat
3. Liverpool — Dangerous wildcard
4. Chelsea — Dark horse
5. Manchester United — Outside contender
The big story: Arsenal have something their four main rivals don't—stability. With several major contenders changing managers or undergoing significant squad transformations, Arsenal have an opportunity to establish themselves as the dominant force of this new Premier League era.
