The Forgotten Birthday - 9 hours ago

Amaka woke up with a quiet excitement she tried to hide. Birthdays had stopped being loud celebrations for her years ago, but still she hoped.

She checked her phone. Nothing.

By noon, she had convinced herself people were just busy. By evening, she stopped checking altogether.

Her mother called, but it was about something else. Her friends posted pictures online, laughing, living, forgetting.

As night fell, she stood in her tiny kitchen, staring at a small cake she bought for herself. She lit a candle and watched the flame flicker.

“No one remembered,” she whispered.

Then she paused.

She picked up a knife, cut a slice, and sat down.

“I remember,” she said softly.

That night, something changed. She didn’t cry herself to sleep. She didn’t wait for validation.

She chose herself, for the first time.
