A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and security expert, Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has cautioned party stakeholders against moves to replace Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 general elections. He described the growing calls for a change on the ticket as ill-timed and potentially divisive, arguing that stability within the party’s top leadership is crucial as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu prepares for a second-term contest.
Mumuni said Shettima’s role in the current administration goes beyond symbolism, noting his political experience, loyalty to the party, and contributions to governance. According to him, altering the ticket could send the wrong signal to voters and party supporters, especially in regions where Shettima commands strong goodwill. He warned that internal wrangling over the vice-presidential slot could distract the government from delivering on its mandate and weaken the APC’s cohesion.
The APC chieftain urged party leaders to focus on performance, unity, and effective communication with Nigerians rather than engaging in premature succession debates. He stressed that maintaining the Tinubu-Shettima ticket would project continuity and confidence, while unnecessary changes could expose the party to avoidable political risks ahead of the 2027 polls.
