Every year, hundreds of bright-eyed freshers storm the University of Abuja gates with big smiles, new wigs, fresh sneakers, and one big dream, to live the soft life. After all, who wouldn’t want to school in a place that trends on TikTok every semester because of one celebrity concert or another?

Let’s be honest, some people didn’t even check JAMB brochure properly, they just heard “UniAbuja is lit,” and clicked “accept admission.” They pictured parties, influencers, love stories under mango trees, and that one viral video of students shouting “Gwagz for life!”

But fast-forward a few weeks, and reality starts introducing itself politely ,with 7 a.m. lectures. The same people who were dancing to Davido at matric are now running late to a class in Mini Campus that starts before the sun even opens its eyes.

Assignments? Oh, UniAbuja will humble you. You’ll see students in front of Access Bank typing projects like it’s a typing competition. Group work? Someone will always disappear till the deadline day, then reappear to ask, “Please, what are we submitting?”

And let’s not forget billing,that silent killer of joy. Hostel rent, handout money, “please send something,” departmental dues, and that one friend who always says, “Abeg borrow me 1k, I’ll return next week.” Weeks later, both the 1k and the friend’s conscience vanish.

But amidst the stress, there’s something magical about UniAbuja life. The lecturers might give you tough love, but they sharpen you for the real world. The long treks between faculties turn into memories. And those sleepless nights before exams? They teach you discipline, survival, and the importance of reading beyond “expo.”
