PRP Calls For Suspension And Investigation Of Nigeria’s Tax Reform Law - 2 months ago

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has formally requested the immediate suspension of Nigeria’s recently enacted tax reform laws. The party’s demand is based on allegations of discrepancies between the version of the laws passed by the National Assembly and the version published by the executive branch.

PRP National Chairman Falalu Bello released a statement referencing concerns raised by Abdussamad Dasuki, a member of the House of Representatives. Dasuki alleged that the executive altered key provisions of the tax laws after legislative approval.

The PRP asserts that such alleged alterations, if verified, could undermine the integrity of Nigeria’s legislative process. The party claims that unauthorized changes to legislation by the executive would constitute a breach of due process and could set a negative precedent for governance.

The PRP has called for a transparent investigation into the matter. The party has stated that any individuals found responsible for unauthorized alterations should be held accountable, regardless of their official position. The PRP further indicated that, should evidence implicate President Bola Tinubu, it would support impeachment proceedings.

In addition to seeking accountability, the PRP has urged the Federal Government to suspend implementation of the tax laws until the allegations are resolved. The party has also indicated its willingness to pursue legal action if the issue is not addressed through official channels.

The tax reform laws in question have been described by the Federal Government as a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s tax system. The legislative process surrounding the laws was marked by resistance, particularly from lawmakers representing northern constituencies, who expressed concerns about potential economic and regional impacts.

The controversy intensified following Dasuki’s claim that the gazetted version of the tax laws included provisions not debated or approved by the National Assembly. This has led to increased scrutiny of the executive’s role in the legislative process and calls for greater transparency.

The presidency has denied the allegations, stating that no unauthorized alterations were made and that implementation of the tax reforms will continue as planned. Despite this, criticism has continued from various political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, both of whom have called for suspension of the tax laws pending clarification.

The PRP’s position is consistent with broader concerns among opposition parties and civil society groups regarding adherence to the rule of law and the separation of powers in Nigeria. The party has characterized the issue as a test of democratic governance and legal integrity.

The resolution of this controversy will likely have significant implications for Nigeria’s legislative and executive relations, as well as for public confidence in the country’s democratic institutions.
