A Chance to Succeed: Why Every Young Person Deserves an Opportunity

A young person does not need much to change their life. Sometimes, all they need is one opportunity, one person who believes in them, or one platform where they can show what they are capable of.

Across Nigeria, many young people have dreams. Some want to become entrepreneurs, teachers, farmers, journalists, engineers, artists, or professionals. Unfortunately, having a dream does not always mean having the opportunity to achieve it.

Many young Nigerians are talented but lack access to quality education, skills training, financial support, mentorship, and decent employment. Some have completed school but remain unemployed. Others have skills but lack the money and equipment needed to start. There are also young people in rural communities whose talents remain unknown because they have never been given the opportunity to develop them.

This should concern everyone.

A country cannot build a strong future by leaving its young people behind. Young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow; they are also important contributors to society today. When they are given the right opportunities, they can create businesses, provide jobs, support their families, and contribute to the development of their communities.

Creating opportunities does not always require huge projects. A small skills-training programme can change someone's life. A scholarship can keep a young person in school. A business grant can help someone turn an idea into a sustainable business. Good mentorship can give a confused young person direction.

The private sector, government, communities, schools, religious organisations, and individuals all have a role to play. Instead of simply telling young people to work harder, society must also ask: What opportunities are we creating for them?

We must move beyond speeches and promises to practical action.

Every young person deserves a fair chance to succeed regardless of where they come from or their financial background. Talent should not be limited by poverty, and someone's future should not be determined by the circumstances of their birth.

When we invest in young people, we are investing in families, communities, and the future of the nation.

Nigeria does not lack talented young people. What is often missing is the opportunity for those talents to shine.

The time to create that opportunity is now.
