The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that seven people died and 70 others were injured in a lone crash involving a heavily loaded trailer along Hadejia Road, Kwanar Danja, in Kano.
Sector Commander Idris Muhammed-Lawal, in a statement issued through the command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, said the accident involved a DAF trailer with registration number KTG 467 YG, which was carrying both passengers and goods.
He explained that the FRSC received a distress call at about 8:35 a.m. and deployed a rescue team to the scene within five minutes. A total of 105 people were on board the vehicle. Seven were confirmed dead at the scene, 70 sustained varying degrees of injuries, while 28 escaped unhurt.
Muhammed-Lawal identified speeding and loss of control as the primary causes of the crash, stressing that the impact was worsened by the illegal and dangerous practice of transporting passengers alongside goods in a cargo vehicle. He noted that the road was in good condition and that no hazardous items were recovered from the scene.
According to the sector commander, the injured victims were evacuated to four different health facilities in Kano. Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital received 24 victims, comprising 17 males and 7 females. General Hospital, Gezawa, also treated 24 victims, including 16 males and 8 females. Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital admitted 20 male victims, while Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, Nasarawa, received 7 victims, made up of 5 males and 2 females.
He commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives and wished the injured a speedy recovery, assuring that the FRSC would continue to intensify patrols and public enlightenment to reduce road traffic crashes.
Muhammed-Lawal used the incident to issue a fresh warning to motorists, particularly commercial drivers, against speeding, reckless driving, and the unlawful conveyance of passengers in vehicles designed for goods. He described such practices as a recurring cause of mass-casualty crashes on Nigerian highways.
He urged road users to prioritise safety, obey traffic regulations, and ensure that vehicles are used strictly for their approved purposes, emphasising that many tragedies on the roads are preventable when basic safety rules are followed.
