Nigerian forward Victor Boniface has taken a significant step in his recovery from a long-term knee injury after returning to Werder Bremen’s matchday squad, offering a timely boost to the Bundesliga club’s survival bid.
The striker was named among the substitutes in Bremen’s 1–1 draw away to Stuttgart, his first inclusion since undergoing knee surgery earlier in the campaign. Although he did not get on the pitch, his presence on the bench was viewed within the club as an important psychological lift for both player and team.
Boniface, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, has endured a disrupted season in Germany. He last featured competitively for Bremen in a brief 11-minute cameo during a 3–2 defeat to Hamburg, before the knee problem sidelined him and initially raised fears that his campaign was over.
The severity of the injury led Bremen and Leverkusen to agree that the forward should return to his parent club for an intensive rehabilitation programme. After months of structured recovery and conditioning work, he rejoined Bremen in late March and gradually reintegrated into full training.
Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has consistently backed the Nigerian, stressing that the loan move was designed to help him regain rhythm and sharpness after an earlier injury-hit spell. Rolfes has pointed to Boniface’s explosive first season in Germany as evidence of his potential, while acknowledging that the physical demands of top-level football and a congested schedule have complicated his progress.
Before his setback, Boniface made 11 appearances for Bremen, contributing two assists but struggling to secure a regular starting berth as he adapted to a new system and battled for fitness. His return now gives head coach and staff an additional attacking option for the final stretch of the season.
Bremen sit in the lower half of the Bundesliga table and still require points to mathematically secure their top-flight status. Upcoming fixtures against Augsburg, Hoffenheim and Borussia Dortmund will determine whether the club can avoid being dragged into a late relegation scrap.
Inside the Bremen camp, there is cautious optimism that Boniface can play a role in those decisive matches. Even limited minutes could help him rebuild confidence and offer Bremen a different dimension in attack as they fight to stay in the Bundesliga.
