CHAPTER FIFTEEN
The second semester began with whispers.
They followed Amara everywhere.
In lecture halls. Along corridors. Even in the quiet corners she once used to hide.
“Is that her?”
“She passed that course…”
“The one nobody survives?”
Even the brightest students those who had always topped the class still couldn’t understand it. That course had a reputation, and Dr. Adrian was known for being impossible to impress.
Yet somehow…
Amara had passed.
And not just barely.
It didn’t take long for things to change.
Dr. Adrian no longer treated her like just another student.
He called on her in class more often.
Praised her answers, even when they weren’t perfect. Sometimes, his gaze lingered too long but Amara chose to ignore it.
To her, it still felt like validation.
Like she finally mattered.
But not everyone was blind to it.
One afternoon, Iris cornered her after class.
“Amara,” she said, her voice unusually serious. “I need to talk to you.”
Amara sighed. “If this is about Dr. Adrian again.....”
“Just listen,” Iris cut in sharply.
That alone made Amara pause.
“There’s something off about him,” Iris continued. “The way he treats you… it’s not normal.”
Amara folded her arms. “You’re just overreacting.”
“I’m not,” Iris said, her eyes flashing with something deeper something almost like fear. “Just… be careful, okay?”
Amara studied her for a moment.
There was something Iris wasn’t saying.
Something she was holding back.
But instead of asking, Amara looked away.
“I can handle myself.”
Iris exhaled slowly, defeated. “I hope you can.”
She walked away, leaving Amara with a strange, uneasy feeling she quickly pushed aside.
Daniel didn’t.
He found her later that evening.
“You need to stay away from him,” he said without hesitation.
Amara frowned. “Not you too.”
“I’m serious,” Daniel insisted. “This whole thing it doesn’t make sense. The way he treats you, your result… it’s not normal.”
Amara’s expression hardened. “So what are you trying to say?”
Daniel hesitated, then spoke more quietly.
“I don’t trust him. And I don’t like the way he looks at you.”
There was something else in his voice.
Something personal.
Something that made Amara uncomfortable.
“You’re just jealous,” she said flatly.
Daniel flinched slightly.
“Maybe I am,” he admitted. “But that doesn’t mean I’m wrong.”
Amara didn’t respond.
She simply walked away.
That evening, her phone buzzed.
A message.
From Dr. Adrian.
Come over. We need to talk.
Her heart skipped.
She stared at the message for a long time.
Something about it felt… different.
Wrong.
She hesitated.
But then came the thought she couldn’t shake
What if this is important?
What if saying no changes everything?
Reluctantly, she went.
His apartment was quiet.
Too quiet.
When he opened the door, he smiled.
“Amara,” he said warmly. “Come in.”
She stepped inside, her movements stiff.
They sat.
At first, everything felt normal.
He spoke the way he always did calm, encouraging, almost gentle.
“You’re doing well,” he told her. “Better than you think.”
Amara nodded, trying to relax.
“You just need someone who believes in you,” he continued.
She felt it again.
That familiar comfort.
That dangerous reassurance.
But then…
The tone shifted.
“You know,” he said slowly, leaning back, “not everyone gets opportunities like this.”
Amara frowned slightly.
“Sir?”
His smile changed.
“It takes… effort… to make sure certain students succeed.”
Her chest tightened.
“I don’t understand”
“I helped you,” he said plainly.
Silence.
Amara’s heart began to pound.
“I made sure you passed.”
The words hit her like a slap.
“No…” she whispered.
“You’re welcome,” he added casually.
Something inside her began to crack.
Then he leaned forward.
And everything fell apart.
“You owe me,” he said.
Amara froze.
“What…?”
His eyes darkened.
“I want you,” he said, his voice no longer gentle. “Your body.”
Her breath caught.
“You think this was free?” he continued coldly. “You think I just liked you?”
Tears burned in her eyes.
“No… this isn’t”
“You’ll do what I say,” he cut in sharply. “Or next semester… you won’t be so lucky.”
Fear gripped her completely.
This wasn’t the man she thought she knew.
This was something else.
Something dangerous.
Amara stood up abruptly, her body trembling.
“I have to go”
He stood too.
“Sit down,” he said, his voice firm.
She shook her head, backing away.
“Don’t make this difficult.”
Her heart was racing now.
“I said I have to go!”
And before he could reach her..…
She ran.
Out the door.
Down the stairs.
Into the night.
By the time she reached her hostel, she was shaking uncontrollably.
Her mind replayed everything.
Every word.
Every look.
Every warning she ignored.
Iris.
Daniel.
Her friend.
They had all tried to tell her.
And she hadn’t listened.
Amara sat on her bed, her hands trembling, her world completely shattered.
For the first time…
She understood the truth.
This was never kindness.
It was control.
And now...…
She didn’t know what he would do next.
