Germany has reassigned the processing of Nigerian student visas to a dedicated visa application centre in Lekki, Lagos, with the stated objective of streamlining procedures for prospective students.
According to the German Embassy in Nigeria, student visa applicants will no longer submit applications directly at the consulate. All submissions and related formalities are now handled at a facility operated by VFS Global, a company that manages visa and consular services for multiple governments.
Under the revised system, Nigerian students intending to study in Germany must first register online and obtain an appointment. Once an appointment is confirmed, applicants are required to appear at the VFS Global centre in Lekki instead of the German consulate. The centre is responsible for receiving documentation, collecting biometric data, and providing other front-end services on behalf of the German missions in Nigeria.
German officials state that this change is intended to increase efficiency and predictability for applicants, who previously encountered long waiting times and logistical difficulties when dealing directly with consular offices. By centralising student visa processing at a specialised facility, the embassy anticipates improved appointment management and a reduction in processing bottlenecks.
The policy shift coincides with continued growth in the number of international students in Germany. In the winter semester 2024/25, universities in Germany enrolled approximately 402,000 international students, representing a six per cent increase over the previous academic year, based on data from the German Academic Exchange Service’s Wissenschaft weltoffen report. Nigerian students are part of this expanding group, attracted by Germany’s academic reputation, the availability of English-taught programmes, and relatively low tuition fees at public institutions.
Education analysts indicate that simplified visa procedures are a significant factor for countries competing for international students. For Nigerian applicants, the visa process can determine whether admission offers from German universities result in actual enrolment. A more structured and accessible process in Lagos may therefore affect student mobility patterns and support Germany’s position as a preferred study destination.
Prospective students are advised to rely on official information sources for guidance on required documentation, timelines, and fees, and to ensure that all materials submitted through the VFS Global centre comply with the standards set by the German missions in Nigeria.
