Why We Keep Clothes We Haven’t Worn In Years 👕 - Yesterday

There is always that one piece of clothing hiding somewhere in our wardrobe.

You haven't worn it in two years. Maybe three.

It doesn't fit properly anymore. You don't even particularly like the style. Yet every time you clean your wardrobe, you look at it and say, “Let me keep it. I might need it someday.”

And somehow, “someday” never comes.

So why do we find it so difficult to let go?

Sometimes, it is because of the memories attached to the clothes. That dress might remind you of your first job interview. That shirt might have been a gift from someone special. Those jeans might remind you of your university days.

Getting rid of the clothing can therefore feel like getting rid of the memory.

There is also the fear of regret. We convince ourselves that the moment we give something away, we will suddenly need it. So we keep clothes for imaginary occasions that may never happen.

Then there is the money factor.

“I bought it with my money.”

Even when we no longer use something, we sometimes feel that throwing it away means admitting that we wasted money. Keeping it feels like protecting our investment, even though the clothes are simply taking up space.

But sometimes, keeping everything doesn't preserve the past. It prevents us from making room for the present.

Your wardrobe should contain clothes that fit your current life, not just the person you used to be or the person you imagine you might become.

Maybe it's time to open that wardrobe and ask yourself:

“If I saw this in a shop today, would I still buy it?”

If the answer is no, perhaps it is finally time to let it go.

Someone else might actually wear what has been sitting untouched in your wardrobe for years.
