Truck Crushes LASTMA Officer And Two Motorcyclists To Death At Badagry Roundabout - 2 days ago

A cement-laden truck has crushed a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority officer and two commercial motorcyclists to death at the Badagry Roundabout, throwing the busy corridor into chaos and grief.

Witnesses said the articulated vehicle was approaching the roundabout at high speed when the driver appeared to lose control. The truck reportedly veered off its lane, mounted the section of the road where traffic was being managed, and ran over the officer and the two motorcyclists waiting by the roadside.

The LASTMA officer was said to be in the middle of the junction, directing vehicles through the morning rush, when the truck suddenly skidded towards him. He was crushed instantly, along with the two riders who were waiting to pick up passengers nearby.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as motorists abandoned their vehicles and pedestrians fled in different directions. The crash immediately triggered a gridlock stretching several kilometres along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, with stranded commuters forced to trek long distances.

A police source said emergency responders from multiple agencies were deployed to the scene to restore order and clear the wreckage. Additional LASTMA officers, police operatives, personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps worked together to manage traffic and secure the area.

The truck driver was apprehended at the scene before he could escape and was taken into custody. Security operatives later towed the truck away as part of ongoing investigations into the cause of the crash.

Officials confirmed that the bodies of the three victims were evacuated and deposited at a hospital mortuary in Badagry. The identities of the deceased were being withheld until their families could be formally notified.

FRSC officials at the scene attributed the crash to loss of control, warning that excessive speed and poor vehicle maintenance remain major causes of fatal accidents on the corridor. They urged motorists and truck drivers to approach the Badagry Roundabout with caution and to obey traffic officers on duty.

Police authorities in Badagry confirmed that the driver is being detained and will face prosecution once investigations are concluded. They pledged a thorough inquiry to determine whether mechanical failure, reckless driving or negligence led to the tragedy.
