President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given final approval for the 2026 annual direct intervention funds to be released through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to 271 public tertiary institutions nationwide. The directive, announced at a strategic stakeholder meeting in Abuja, sets out fresh disbursement guidelines that will see all universities receive about ₦2.525 billion each, polytechnics about ₦1.871 billion, and colleges of education roughly ₦2.056 billion under the new intervention cycle. Allocation letters have already been distributed to beneficiary institutions as part of preparations for the rollout.

TETFund Executive Secretary Sonny Echono said the funding aims to enhance physical infrastructure, academic programmes, and research capacity across the tertiary sector, with a new intervention line focused on integrating the Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN) and expanding access to global academic resources. Officials also noted that the 2026 intervention will strengthen laboratories, workshops, and student exposure programmes through private-sector partnerships and other initiatives designed to drive innovation and institutional transformation.
