Growing up, there was one fruit that never seemed to be missing from our house.
It didn't matter if money was tight or if the shopping list had to be shortened. Somehow, there would always be a few apples sitting quietly in the fruit bowl.
As children, we didn't think much of it. We preferred biscuits, sweets, and soft drinks. An apple felt... ordinary. In fact, if you asked us to choose between an apple and a packet of chips, the apple didn't stand a chance.
Whenever one of us reached for junk food, my mum would smile and say, “Eat an apple first. If you're still hungry after that, then you can have the snacks.”
At the time, it sounded like one of those classic parent rules that didn't make much sense.
Years later, I finally understood.
She wasn't trying to stop us from enjoying treats. She was teaching us, in the simplest way she knew, that the best foods don't always come in colourful wrappers.
That's probably why apples have earned the nickname “superfruit.”
Not because they're magical.
Not because eating one will keep you from ever getting sick.
But because this humble fruit quietly does a lot for your body.
Apples are rich in dietary fibre, which supports healthy digestion and helps you stay full for longer. They're also packed with vitamin C, which helps support your immune system, and antioxidants, which protect your body's cells from everyday damage.
One interesting fact? Many of the nutrients are found in the skin, so after washing your apple well, it's often best to enjoy it without peeling.
Of course, no single fruit can replace a balanced diet. Apples aren't a cure-all. But they're one of those simple, everyday foods that consistently offer real nutritional benefits without asking for much in return.
Maybe that's what makes them a true superfruit.
Not because they're expensive.
Not because they're trendy.
But because they've been quietly helping people stay healthier for generations.
