2027: PDP‑APM Alliance Draws Massive Crowd In Oyo - 1 month ago

Ibadan’s historic Mapo Hall turned into a sea of party colours as thousands of supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party and the Allied Peoples’ Movement poured into the ancient arena for a Unity Mega Rally ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The gathering, described by observers as one of the largest political mobilisations in Oyo State in recent years, followed the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two parties. The pact, sealed at the PDP South‑West Secretariat, Soji Adagunodo House on Old Ife Road in Ibadan, was supervised by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and the National Chairman of the APM, Yusuf Dantalle.

By the time the rally commenced at Mapo Hall, senior government officials, influential PDP chieftains and national and state leaders of the APM had taken their seats, while drummers, dancers and party faithful filled the surrounding streets. Chants in support of the new alliance and of Makinde’s political future echoed across the hilltop venue.

The event is widely seen as the launchpad for Makinde’s anticipated 2027 presidential bid. Party insiders say the governor is using the alliance to project himself as a bridge between established political structures and emerging forces, positioning Oyo as a strategic base in the race for national power.

Beyond the presidential calculations, the rally also served as a platform to introduce aspirants seeking state and national legislative seats on the APM ticket, under the umbrella of the new partnership. Strategists from both parties argue that a coordinated slate of candidates will help consolidate votes and reduce internal fragmentation that has historically weakened opposition blocs.

The alliance is already reshaping political alignments within the state. Makinde had earlier endorsed former Commissioner for Finance, Bimbo Adekanmbi, to fly the PDP flag in the 2027 elections, a move interpreted as an attempt to balance continuity with broader coalition-building.

Analysts note that while the crowd at Mapo Hall underscores Makinde’s grassroots appeal, the durability of the PDP‑APM pact will depend on how both parties manage power-sharing, candidate selection and the expectations of their respective bases in the months ahead.
