Benue-based content creator Happiness Agbo has publicly addressed a surge of romantic messages she says began after she disclosed details of her online income, stating that she will not enter relationships with men who are financially struggling.

Agbo initially gained visibility by sharing videos of her daily life in Benue State, often set in modest and challenging environments. Her content attracted both a growing audience and negative commentary, including personal insults about her appearance.

As her following increased, Agbo’s content began to generate higher view counts, which she reports translated into increased income and brand partnerships. She recently stated that she had spent approximately N7 million of her online earnings on ventures she later considered unprofitable. Following this disclosure, she reports a marked increase in romantic messages from men, including some who had previously criticized her.

According to Agbo, many of these messages included declarations of love and promises of loyalty, with some senders acknowledging their limited financial resources while emphasizing their willingness to treat her well. She has rejected these advances, explicitly linking her stance to her observations of her late mother’s financial hardship and stating that she does not intend to repeat that pattern.

Agbo says she advises her younger sister not to date men who are still financially struggling, arguing that women should avoid normalizing or idealizing hardship in relationships. She characterizes acceptance of romantic interest from men who approached her only after learning of her earnings as inconsistent with the guidance she provides to her sister and her audience.

She has also warned that she may publicly disclose some of the unsolicited messages if they continue, stating that the volume of such communication interferes with her ability to identify and respond to business-related inquiries from brands.

Agbo summarizes the situation by noting that some individuals who previously insulted her appearance are now among those seeking a romantic relationship with her.
