Spain superstar Lamine Yamal has opened up on the massive 2026 World Cup semifinal showdown with France on 14 July. The 19 year old has endured a subdued tournament despite arriving as a prime contender for the Golden Ball. His early struggles were largely attributed to arriving in the United States with a lingering hamstring injury. Nevertheless, as Spain prepare to face France, Yamal insists he is 100% and ready to go. After scoring just once in the tournament so far, the teenager believes a semifinal against France is the perfect stage to finally take off, calling it the biggest game of his life.

'I think that if France has to fear anyone, it's us... as we're the ones who have knocked them out before,' Yamal said. “This is the biggest and most important game of my career, no doubt," Yamal said. "There are situations tougher than a match. I need to stay calm. I know what I am capable of, and I do not feel the slightest bit of anxiety."
France enter as slight favorites, largely due to their tournament form and the unstoppable nature of their attacking trio: Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise, and Ousmane Dembele.
Lamal, who celebrated his 19th birthday on 13 July, ruffled some feathers after saying that France, rather than Spain, ought to be “afraid” given recent defeats against La Roja.
Speaking during a press conference, the Spanish prodigy addressed his earlier comment, insisting that Spain are European champions.

“I was asked if I was afraid of France, and I said no. We are European champions. It’s simply football,” Lamal stated.
Regarding how he celebrated his birthday, Lamal revealed that he had purchased the chunky, jewel-encrusted necklace he wore at the press conference. According to him, the real birthday present would be a victory over France on Tuesday, with a trip to New York.
“I haven’t received many gifts yet. The best gift would be a win on Tuesday and a trip to New York,” Lamal said.
“I don’t focus on goals, but it’s always special to score in a match like this. I accept the challenge. That’s why I came here.
While promising a “beautiful match for the spectators”, Lamal added, “It’s the game everyone was waiting for.”
“There are far more difficult situations in life than a football match, so I’m calm. I don’t feel any extra pressure; I’ll go out and play like always and give my all for the team.”
However, Spain are European champions and will fancy their chances, setting the stage for a true blockbuster.
