Why Nigerian Universities Should Jump On AI Now – NYSC Boss Says It Could Add $15 Billion To The Economy By 2030 - 1wk ago

Imagine this: in just five years, Artificial Intelligence could pump an extra $15 billion into Nigeria’s economy. That’s the big claim from NYSC Director-General Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu while speaking to university leaders recently.

He basically told them, “Guys, stop sleeping on AI. Your campuses should be the ones teaching students how to build and use it – not just abroad.” According to him, if universities take the lead, we’ll see better lectures, smarter research, more startups, and thousands of new jobs.

And it’s not just talk. NITDA (the tech agency) is already training 3,600 teachers across the country to become “master trainers” in digital skills. The goal? Make sure every school – from primary to university – starts speaking the language of tech fluently.

Simple truth: the countries winning tomorrow are the ones teaching AI today. If our universities move fast, that $15 billion won’t just be a number – it’ll be new businesses, better salaries, and Nigerian youths solving Nigerian problems with world-class tools.

So yeah, the message is clear: Nigerian lecturers and VCs, the train is moving. Hop on now or watch it leave the station without us. 🚀
