Cristiano Ronaldo Ends Al Nassr Dispute - 2 days ago

Cristiano Ronaldo has decided to end his stand-off with Al Nassr and return to action for the Saudi Pro League club, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation.

The Portugal captain had refused to play in Al Nassr’s last two league fixtures, a 2-0 win over Al Ittihad and a victory over Al Riyadh, in what sources described as a protest over the level of support his club was receiving from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the powerful state-backed body that controls a majority stake in several leading teams.

Ronaldo, 41, was said to be frustrated that Al Nassr were being outmuscled in the transfer market by domestic rivals Al Hilal, who are also majority-owned by the PIF. The tension reportedly escalated after Al Hilal secured the signing of Karim Benzema from Al Ittihad during the January window, a move that reinforced the perception that Al Nassr were falling behind in squad building.

Sources indicate that Ronaldo agreed to end his boycott after key conditions were met. Chief among them were the payment of overdue salaries at Al Nassr and the restoration of full decision-making powers to the club’s senior management, including sporting director Simão Coutinho and CEO José Semedo, who had previously been sidelined by the PIF’s intervention.

With those demands addressed, Ronaldo has informed the club he will be available for the upcoming league match against Al Fateh and is expected to rejoin preparations as Al Nassr also continue their campaign in the Asian Champions League Two.

Ronaldo has been central to Al Nassr’s season, scoring 18 goals and providing three assists in 22 appearances across competitions. His return is a major boost for a side locked in a tight title race, sitting second in the Saudi Pro League, one point behind archrivals Al Hilal.

The dispute has unfolded against a backdrop of growing scrutiny over the influence of star players and state-backed ownership in Saudi football. In a statement issued last week, the Saudi Pro League stressed that no individual, regardless of status, could shape policy beyond their own team and reiterated that all clubs operate under the same financial and regulatory framework designed to preserve competitive balance.
