Lagos APC Sets Stage For Crucial State Congress At Onikan - 1wk ago

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has fixed its next state congress for Tuesday, with party leaders describing the exercise as a major step in reshaping the ruling party’s structure ahead of future electoral battles.

In a formal notice signed by the Chairman of the Lagos State Congress Committee, the party announced that the congress will hold at the Mobolaji Johnson Stadium, formerly Onikan Stadium, on Lagos Island. Proceedings are expected to begin at 10am, with a full complement of statutory delegates drawn from across the state’s political hierarchy.

The committee anchored the exercise on Article 12.8 of the APC Constitution, which outlines the composition and powers of state congresses. The notice framed the gathering as a constitutional obligation and a key mechanism for internal democracy within the party.

Those eligible to participate include members of the influential State Advisory Council, the State Chairman and members of the State Executive Committee, as well as the Governor and Deputy Governor, provided they are card-carrying members of the APC. All serving and former members of the National Assembly from Lagos who belong to the party are also listed as delegates.

The delegate list further extends to members of the National Executive Committee from Lagos, serving and past members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on the party’s platform, elected local government chairmen and their deputies, and all elected councillors across the state’s 245 wards.

Grassroots representation is reinforced through the inclusion of party chairmen and secretaries in all local government areas, alongside five delegates per ward, to be produced from preceding ward congresses. Members of the Zonal Executive Committee from Lagos complete the roster of statutory participants.

The committee stressed that access to the venue will be tightly controlled. All accredited delegates are required to present valid APC membership cards and official accreditation tags before they will be allowed into the stadium, a measure aimed at preventing impersonation and ensuring order during the proceedings.

Party insiders say the congress will be closely watched within and outside Lagos, as it is expected to produce a new state leadership, recalibrate internal alliances and signal the direction of the APC’s political machinery in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
