The Ogun State Police Command says it is preparing to arrest and prosecute a TikTok user identified as Mirabel, after she allegedly admitted that her widely publicised claim of being raped was false.
Mirabel, known on TikTok as @mirab351, had earlier alleged that a stranger broke into her apartment in the Ogijo area of Ogun State and raped her, a claim that quickly went viral and drew public outrage online.
The narrative began to unravel after a phone conversation between Mirabel and social media commentator VeryDarkMan, also known as VDM, surfaced online. In the audio, Mirabel is heard retracting key parts of her story and pleading for help.
Confronted with inconsistencies and messages she had attributed to her supposed attacker, she reportedly confessed that some of the evidence had been fabricated. She also admitted to creating a threatening TikTok account herself to lend credibility to her allegations.
“Yes, sir, please help me, I am very sorry,” she said in the recording, adding that she had been taking drugs and was not thinking clearly when she posted the videos.
A police source said senior officers, including a Divisional Police Officer, visited the hospital where Mirabel is receiving treatment and are making arrangements to take her into custody once she is discharged.
“Once she is discharged, she will be taken into custody, and a charge will be prepared against her for trial. The essence is to serve as a deterrent to others,” the source said, noting that the command views false rape claims as a serious offence that undermines genuine victims.
Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola said the Commissioner of Police had ordered immediate engagement with Mirabel once her initial report surfaced online. She first reported at the Ibafo Police Station, where officers discovered that the alleged incident fell under the Ogijo Division’s jurisdiction.
According to Odutola, Mirabel was taken to a medical facility for examination and treatment before being transferred to Ogijo Police Station for documentation and further investigation. Owing to her fragile condition, she was later referred for more extensive medical care.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency confirmed it had been in touch with a close friend of Mirabel, but clarified that the case lies outside its jurisdiction and has been handed over to the appropriate Ogun authorities.
The Ogun State Police Command says it is still reviewing the case and will issue a formal statement after concluding its internal processes.
