FRSC Enforces Strict Compliance With Road Safety Protocols During Festive Season - 2 months ago

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) hereby reiterates its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property on Nigerian highways, particularly during the high-risk end-of-year travel period. In accordance with its statutory mandate, the Corps has initiated a comprehensive nationwide operation, designated as ‘Zero Tolerance’ for dangerous driving, under the direct supervision of Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed. This operation is a necessary response to the annual surge in vehicular movement and is intended to mitigate the perennial risks associated with festive season travel.

It is imperative to note that the FRSC, as the primary authority responsible for road safety, has observed a marked increase in traffic volume along major corridors, notably the Kaduna–Abuja–Lokoja axis. In line with established protocols, the Corps has deployed a substantial number of personnel and resources to these critical routes. Special emphasis has been placed on the Abuja–Lokoja Road, which has recently experienced significant congestion. The Corps Marshal personally supervised the deployment and monitoring activities to ensure strict adherence to safety standards and to preempt any escalation of traffic-related incidents.

The FRSC’s operational strategy is both proactive and preventive. The Corps Marshal has directed that monitoring exercises be extended to the Abuja–Kaduna Road, where ongoing construction poses additional challenges. The presence of FRSC officers at these sites is essential to maintaining the free flow of traffic and preventing avoidable obstructions. The Corps will not tolerate any form of non-compliance with traffic regulations, especially in areas where infrastructural developments may exacerbate congestion.

Furthermore, the ‘Zero Tolerance’ operation encompasses more than routine traffic management. The FRSC is actively identifying and removing from circulation those drivers whose conduct endangers public safety. Offences such as speeding, driving under the influence, distracted driving, and other forms of reckless behaviour are being met with immediate and decisive action. The Corps is resolute in its duty to ensure that only responsible and law-abiding individuals are permitted to operate vehicles on public roads during this critical period.

To sustain the momentum of this operation, the FRSC monitoring team will maintain a continuous presence along the Abuja–Lokoja corridor and other identified hotspots. The Corps is fully aware that traffic patterns fluctuate throughout the day, and has therefore instituted early deployment protocols to address potential issues before they escalate. This anticipatory approach is a testament to the Corps’ dedication to public safety and operational excellence.

Of particular concern to the FRSC is the persistent violation of loading regulations, especially the hazardous practice of mixed loading, where passengers and goods are transported together on trucks. Such practices are unequivocally condemned by the Corps, as they constitute a grave threat to human life. The FRSC is actively intervening to remove passengers from unsafe vehicles and ensure their continued journey in compliance with safety standards. The Corps will not condone any disregard for established safety protocols.

In furtherance of its mandate, the FRSC has issued directives to all sector commanders to guarantee the early and strategic deployment of personnel to all known traffic hotspots nationwide. This measure is designed to ensure a visible and effective FRSC presence, thereby deterring infractions and providing timely assistance to road users. Reports confirm that both regular and special marshals are fully engaged in these efforts, reflecting the Corps’ institutional capacity and readiness.

The Corps Marshal has also issued a clear and unequivocal warning to all motorists: indiscipline, impatience, and disrespect for fellow road users will not be tolerated under any circumstances. The FRSC will take immediate action against any individual found engaging in bullying, intimidation, or other forms of anti-social behaviour on the roads. Such conduct is antithetical to the values of safety and mutual respect that the Corps upholds, and offenders will be removed from circulation to safeguard the public interest.

The ‘Zero Tolerance’ operation is a manifestation of the FRSC’s moral and legal responsibility to protect all Nigerians during periods of heightened travel. The Corps urges all road users to comply fully with traffic regulations, exercise patience, and cooperate with FRSC personnel. By adhering to these directives, the public will contribute to the reduction of accidents and fatalities, thereby ensuring a safe and enjoyable festive season for all.
