"There’s no denying that Fela made his fair share of mistakes. Recently, I came across a video of a woman questioning why people still celebrate his legacy, pointing out that he allegedly exposed women to HIV and eventually died of AIDS.

It made me pause and think—Fela, you really lived on your own terms."

According to Seun Kuti, there’s a side of his father’s lifestyle many people may not fully understand. He explained that Fela didn’t restrict the women in his life. In fact, he believed in freedom on both sides i.e just as he was free to be with multiple women, they were also free to see other men. The only rule, apparently, was that those relationships stayed outside his home.

That kind of arrangement is far from what many would consider traditional. And Seun suggested that this openness may have played a role in how things eventually turned out. He also compared it to his own father’s lifestyle, noting that Fela didn’t go outside to be with other women, everything revolved around his home and the people in it.

"At the end of the day, nobody is perfect. People live, make choices, and deal with the consequences of those choices. What remains undeniable, though, is that Fela Anikulapo-Kuti stood firmly for what he believed in and used his voice for the people.

His life wasn’t without controversy, but his impact on music, culture, and social consciousness is something many still respect today."
