Ok we're all guilty of this one... even me sometimes 😅
Interchanging simile and metaphor, or mistaking one for the other.
So today, let's learn what the two are and their difference.
Simile is a comparison that uses the words "like" or “as.”
For example:
She shines like the sun.
Nobody is saying she is the sun. We're simply comparing her brightness or presence to that of the sun using the word like.
Another example:
He is as brave as a lion.
Take note, a comparison is being made using as.
But metaphor, on the other hand, skips the "like" and "as" completely and makes a direct comparison.
For example:
She is the sun of my life.
Time heals or time is a thief.
Time isn't a doctor, and neither did it steal that five hundred naira you've been looking for since yesterday.
The writer is directly transferring qualities from one thing to another.
A simple way to remember it:
📌 Simile compares – A is like B
📌 Metaphor defines – A is B
That's the tiny difference that causes all the confusion.
