ÌThe United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a clear warning to visa applicants: do not use artificial intelligence tools, beauty filters or other digital editing software on passport photographs submitted for US visa applications.

The mission, in a public advisory shared on its official X account, stressed that any photo that appears altered, filtered or digitally enhanced will be rejected. Such submissions, it cautioned, can significantly delay the processing of visa applications, as consular officers may request new photographs or additional verification.

According to the guidance, acceptable passport photos must be recent, taken within the last six months, and must accurately reflect the applicant’s current appearance. The image should be clear enough that security and border officials, including Transportation Security Administration and Customs and Border Protection officers, can easily match the traveller to the photograph.

The mission underscored that the US Department of State will not accept images that have been retouched to smooth skin, alter facial features, change backgrounds, adjust lighting in an artificial way, or apply filters commonly found on social media platforms. Even subtle enhancements, it warned, can interfere with biometric systems that rely on precise facial details.

The advisory aligns with a broader effort by US authorities to protect the integrity of travel documents at a time when AI-generated and manipulated images are becoming more sophisticated and harder to detect. Consular and border agencies increasingly depend on high-quality, unaltered photographs to support facial recognition technology used in identity verification and fraud prevention.

Officials say that when applicants submit edited photos, consular staff may be unable to confirm that the person in front of them is the same person in the image on file. This can trigger additional scrutiny, requests for new photos, interview delays and, in some cases, the need to reschedule appointments.

Prospective travellers are therefore urged to use standard passport photography services or follow official guidelines carefully when taking their own photos, ensuring neutral expressions, plain backgrounds and natural, unedited images that comply fully with US visa requirements.
