This might not ordinarily be the conversation that pops up out of nowhere as many people pass through life without knowing anything about this ‘informal formal’ aspect of becoming a doctor in Nigeria. Just like the initiation performance done to New theatre art students to officially become thespians, a fresh medical student also goes through a ceremonial right of passage called the ‘White Coat Ceremony’. It is not just a ceremonial event that officially launches medical students into the academic medical profession journey, it is a symbolic and nostalgic moment if you ask any current medical Doctor or senior medical student. Those memories remain ever fresh, valid and significant for every new student starting out their medical journey.
On the 15th of January, 2026, the University of Lagos, Idi Araba campus officially welcomed their 2030 set by organizing the ‘White Coat Ceremony' right of passage. Aspiring medical students were made to put on their white coats- a representation of the medical profession- to finally welcome them to their respective academic medical paths. Putting on the coat meant a lot to many. From the sleepless nights, constant headaches, brain block moments and down to writing the final exams and qualifying for their chosen course, this ceremony gave them ‘a pat on the back’ as a sign of reward for their hard work and doggedness.
It is important to note that the white coat ceremony is not just another time to celebrate and take pictures. It is a subtle reminder of the huge responsibility and societal significance that comes with the medical profession. It sets the stage for the students to officially put themselves in the shoes of future medical professionals who are ready to serve and provide optimum care to humanity.
May God bless all medical professionals who continually ensure their best is served to all, irrespective of race, status and affiliation.
