The Federal High Court in Lagos has nullified a controversial provision of the Police Act that barred female police officers from marrying without approval from their Commissioner of Police. Justice ruled Regulation 124 unconstitutional, affirming that it discriminated against women and violated their fundamental rights. The case, filed by the Women Empowerment and Legal Aid Initiative (WELA) and argued by Mrs Funmi Falana, challenged the rule requiring female officers to seek permission and serve three years before marriage. The court held the restriction inconsistent with Nigeria’s Constitution and international human rights treaties, granting women in the force the freedom to marry without official approval
