The Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU at Plateau State University Bokkos has declared a total comprehensive and indefinite strike over what it describes as the failure of the institution’s management to address a six-point charter of demands.

The decision followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum earlier issued to the university administration. After reviewing management’s response at a congress meeting the union resolved that none of the key issues had been satisfactorily addressed and that industrial action was the only option left.

In a statement signed by the chapter Chairperson Vincent D Choji and Secretary Lomka Kopdiya the union said its members could no longer continue to work under conditions it considers unfair and insecure. Congress it noted was convinced that the substance of the demands on all six items remained unresolved despite repeated engagements with the authorities.

Central to ASUU’s grievances is the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme for academic staff which the union insists is a statutory requirement that guarantees the retirement security of its members. The union is also demanding full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government ASUU agreement at the university including the payment of all financial entitlements arising from that pact.

ASUU further listed the payment of arrears from January 1 2026 and the settlement of 22 months’ outstanding arrears of the 25 and 35 per cent wage award as critical conditions for suspending the strike. Union leaders argue that the prolonged non-payment of these entitlements has eroded staff morale and undermined the quality of teaching and research.

Beyond financial issues the union is pressing for improved security and welfare on campus. It is demanding the provision of safe and secure staff quarters and the construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence to curb incursions and protect both staff and students. The statement also condemned what ASUU described as intimidation and victimisation of union leaders calling for an immediate end to such practices.

With the approval of ASUU’s National Executive Council the Plateau State University chapter has directed all members to withdraw from teaching supervision examinations and other academic activities until further notice leaving students and parents uncertain about when normal academic work will resume.
