Manchester United is experiencing a reduction in squad depth following an injury to midfielder Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes sustained a hamstring injury during the team’s 2-1 loss to Aston Villa. The injury occurred late in the first half, after which Fernandes continued playing until halftime but did not return for the second half. Lisandro Martínez replaced him at the start of the second half.
The injury has been classified as a “soft tissue” issue. Manager Ruben Amorim stated that the recovery timeline is uncertain but indicated that Fernandes is expected to miss multiple matches. Fernandes has historically demonstrated high availability, having missed only three matches due to injury or illness since joining Manchester United from Sporting CP.
The timing of Fernandes’ injury coincides with other squad availability issues. Several players, including Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, and Noussair Mazraoui, are currently participating in the Africa Cup of Nations. Additionally, defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire are unavailable due to injury. Kobbie Mainoo was also withdrawn from the squad prior to the Aston Villa match because of a calf injury sustained in training.
As a result of these absences, manager Amorim included 18-year-olds Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey in the matchday squad, both of whom made their senior debuts. Amorim stated that the team would need to adapt and utilize available players, emphasizing the need to continue competing despite the reduced squad depth.
Defender Diogo Dalot commented on Fernandes’ absence, describing it as significant due to Fernandes’ consistent presence and resilience. Dalot also noted that the current situation provides opportunities for other players to increase their playing time and demonstrate their value to the team.
Manchester United’s immediate focus will be on adjusting tactics and squad selection to compensate for the absence of Fernandes and other unavailable players as they prepare for upcoming fixtures.
