NAFDAC Reboots Enforcement Of Sachet Alcohol Ban, Says No Company Closed - 6 days ago

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced that it has resumed full enforcement of the ban on alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small plastic or glass bottles under 200 millilitres, following a directive from the Nigerian Senate and backed by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

The agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stressed that the renewed action is aimed at protecting public health—especially children, adolescents and young adults from easy access to cheap, high-alcohol products that have been linked to misuse and social problems. NAFDAC emphasised that no alcohol-producing company has been shut down as a result of the enforcement; only specific packaging formats are affected.

The renewed push comes after a moratorium on the ban’s implementation, which had been extended to permit manufacturers to exhaust old stock and adjust production lines.

While there has been resistance from industry groups citing economic concerns and conflicting government directives, NAFDAC maintains that the ban is grounded in public health evidence and Nigeria’s commitment to reducing harmful alcohol use. The agency is working with other federal bodies to continue sensitisation campaigns and ensure compliance with the regulation, which excludes larger pack sizes not covered by the ban.
