Rape is a form of sexual assault involving sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual penetration that is committed against a person without their valid consent. The act can be carried out using physical force, coercion, or the threat of injury. For as long as humanity has been in existence, rape has been a cancer that has eaten deep into the fabric of our morals and communities. Rapists often subjugated their victims into having their way with them just to feel in power or control, out of frustration or vindictiveness and lack of human empathy and narcissism.

This chart shows the years(period at which rape has escalated), age range (years of victims), zones(regions across Nigeria), and drugs(substances used to intoxicate). The age range from 16-20 has the highest rate on the chart which translates to victims being of this age group(young adults). Why should we have young and innocent people both young and old to not feel a sense of security? Authorities try averagely to combat this criminal offense but what have we done as a people. When a girl gets raped her family try to hide it so she wouldn’t face backlash, so the society wouldn’t point fingers and make mockery of her. Have we not failed as a society by shaming the victims that face such brutal assaults, and giving the perpetrators more stamina to keep at it.

This shows the psychological warfare that victims experience post assault. Rape is definitely one of the underrated criminal offenses across the globe. Sixty to seventy percent of rapists are allegedly still walking freely amongst us.    During a Karnataka Legislative Assembly, Congress MLA K.R. Ramesh Kumar (a.k.a Ramesh Kumar) said(paraphrased)“when rape is inevitable one should lie down and enjoy it”,while criticizing legislators for not paying attention to the speaker and they found what he had said amusing. This was a man that the masses deemed worthy and chose to make a representative. What kind of barbaric society would we be living in had everyone thought like him? What happened to standing firm on truth and booing injustice? According to the 1999 constitution of Nigeria, the punishment for rape is life imprisonment. Due to corruption and disregard for the laws of the country people fear nothing. Let us support rape victims in the small and colossal ways we can. Encourage them to shift their focus and make a living. Let’s protect our younger brothers and sisters from nasty pedophiles. Let us help them out of depression, stigmatization, and eternal pain. SAY NO TO RAPE AND YES TO PROSECUTING RAPISTS.
