Nigeria gears up to celebrate Democracy Day on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, as the Federal Government declares it a public holiday. Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, conveyed the announcement, extending congratulations to all Nigerians on this auspicious occasion.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized the importance of reflecting on the sacrifices of Nigeria's founding fathers as the nation observes another Democracy Day. He urged unity, security, peace, and indivisibility, calling on all citizens to uphold the principles of democratic governance.

Reiterating President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to positive reforms aimed at revitalizing the economy and bolstering security, Tunji-Ojo echoed a message of progress and hope for Nigeria's democracy.

He extended a call to both Nigerians and friends of Nigeria to acknowledge the strides made thus far and to anticipate a brighter future for democracy in the nation.

With Nigeria's transition to democracy from the era of military rule on May 29, 1999, Democracy Day had traditionally been observed on that date. However, in 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari made the historic decision to move Democracy Day to June 12. This move was in honor of Chief M.K.O Abiola, a national hero of democracy, and to commemorate a pivotal moment in Nigeria's history - a free election where the people's choice was denied.

As Nigeria prepares to mark this significant day, citizens are reminded of the importance of democracy, unity, and the ongoing journey towards a more prosperous and inclusive future.
