Nigeria’s Senate on Tuesday expressed strong support for the deepening military collaboration with the United States in the fight against terrorism, while solemnly remembering Nigerians who have died amid ongoing insecurity.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, speaking at the first plenary of 2026 following the Christmas and New Year recess, said the partnership with the US military including enhanced intelligence sharing and increased deliveries of materiel was an important component in the country’s counter-terrorism strategy.
Akpabio also extended heartfelt condolences to families affected by violent attacks, underscoring that the human toll of insecurity must remain central to legislative and policy responses.
The Senate’s commendation comes as the broader cooperation between Nigeria and the United States continues to evolve, with Washington boosting support to tackle Islamic State-linked militants and other extremist groups within Nigeria’s borders.
