Light, Camera, Chaos ๐ฌ๐
Ever wondered what it really takes to bring a short film to life? As the Production Manager for our short film Her Choice, Iโm basically the captain of a ship sailing through a storm of cameras, cables, andโฆ people who suddenly forget their lines the moment the camera rolls ๐ . From the first spark of an idea to the final cut, my job is to make sure every part of this creative machine runs smoothly and sometimes stop an actor from trying to fix the lighting with a selfie stick ๐คฆโโ๏ธ๐ธ.
Being a Production Manager isnโt just about making sure people show up on set (though yes, thatโs important too!). Itโs about connecting the dots: keeping the director, producer, and crew on the same page, juggling schedules, budgets, locations, equipment, and yesโฆ reminding the sound guy that shouting โIs it recording?โ every 5 seconds doesnโt help anyone ๐ค๐. My role is to make sure everyone knows what theyโre doing, when theyโre doing it, and that no creative energy goes to waste.
So how do I pull this off? It all starts with planning. I create a detailed production schedule and budget, making sure we donโt overshoot our resources or accidentally book the location when a herd of cows decides to pass by ๐๐ณ. I meet with department headsโlighting, sound, costume, set design, and more to clarify responsibilities and make sure everyone has exactly what they need to shine. On set, funny things happen all the time: someone mixes up the scripts, an actor forgets their prop, and somehow, the wrong costume always appears at the wrong scene ๐.
Once shooting begins, my days turn into a whirlwind of action: supervising daily shoots, tracking expenses, keeping everyone on time, and making sure each scene comes together as planned.
Of course, challenges are part of the game. Coordinating multiple departments, handling budget limits, and dealing with unexpected delays can feel like playing musical chairsโฆ but with cameras and props instead of chairs ๐ฅ๐ช. My secret? Communication, flexibility, and a sense of humor. Constant check-ins, backup plans for every hiccup, and laughing through chaos keep the energy aliveโand the crew balanced.
Keeping everyone on schedule and motivated is another tricky part. I rely on call sheets, daily updates, and keeping spirits high with snacks ๐ซ๐ฟ. A well-timed joke or an โaccidentalโ dance break can magically turn a stressed crew into happy, productive humans ๐๐.
At the end of the day, my role is the backbone of production. I make sure Her Choice stays on time, on budget, and tells a story that truly resonates. With careful planning, teamwork, and a little on-set improvisation (and a LOT of zobo ๐น๐), I help transform a script into a finished film people will actually want to watch.
Being a Production Manager is challenging, chaotic, and sometimes stressful, but itโs also incredibly rewarding. Thereโs nothing like seeing a scene come together exactly as imagined, knowing you played a key part in making it happen. For anyone dreaming of a career in film, understanding this role is the ultimate masterclass in leadership, problem-solving, and creativity.
Lights. Camera. Chaos ๐ฌ๐คฃ And yesโฆ all under my watchful (and slightly energized) eye!
