DESERTIFICATION AND DROUGHT

DATE: JUNE 23, 2026

 VENUE: UNIVERSITY OF ABUJA

ORGANIZED BY: DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENT COMMUNICATION

THEME: RANGELANDS: RECOGNIZE. RESPECT. RESTORE.

As part of the activities marking World Desertification and Drought Day 2026, the Department of Development Communication, University of Abuja, organized a tree-planting campaign aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and combating land degradation.

The success of the project was made possible through the support and coordination of our lecturer, Dr. Jamila M. Dahiru, alongside the faculty executives and other coordinators who worked diligently to ensure the smooth planning and execution of the exercise. Their leadership and commitment greatly contributed to the achievement of the project's objectives.

The project provided students with the opportunity to participate directly in environmental conservation efforts through the planting of tree seedlings within the university environment. The exercise emphasized the importance of protecting rangelands, restoring degraded land, and encouraging collective action against the effects of climate change.

MY ROLE AS A FIELD WORKER

During the exercise, I actively participated in the preparation of planting sites by helping to dig holes and arrange seedlings for planting. I also assisted in planting the trees and watering them immediately after planting to support their growth and survival. I worked together with other team members to distribute materials and ensure that activities were carried out smoothly throughout the event.

LESSONS LEARNED

The project taught me that environmental protection is a shared responsibility. I learned the importance of tree planting in preventing desertification, improving air quality, and creating a healthier environment for future generations.

CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED

One major concern is ensuring the survival of the newly planted trees, especially during periods of insufficient rainfall. Continuous monitoring and proper maintenance will be necessary to guarantee the success of the project.

CONCLUSION

The tree-planting exercise was a meaningful and impactful initiative that demonstrated how small actions can contribute to solving global environmental challenges. I am proud to have participated in this project and contribute to the restoration and preservation of our environment.
