Ode to the Students of Unilag
Akokites, sun and rain made,
Hustlers and silent geniuses of children,
You come up before the town is quite awake.
Heavy dreams, no broken hearts.
Books battered and brains ablaze,
You pass bridges of endurance and perseverance.
Not only learning what is in class,
But what it means to endure.
During the twenties in the crowded halls,
Your excellence you pursue with dogged hope,
Finding a balance between faith, fear and ambition.
On the edge of tomorrow.
You debate under mango-trees,
Strain and cry and laugh, and cry.
But still are high when outcomes are called,
Since there was no option of quitting.
Oh Unilag students, strong and daring,
You are evidence of the fact that genius is everywhere,
The determination alone can elevate that greatness.
Akokites—
Think. Learn. Excel.
The nation watches,
And your face is on the future.
