Being a young adult can feel like standing in the middle of a busy road, trying to figure out which direction to take. Everyone seems to have advice for you, but nobody gives you a clear map.
You are expected to have your life figured out, build a career, make money, maintain relationships, and somehow enjoy your youth at the same time. The truth is, you will make mistakes. But there are some mistakes you should try your best to avoid.
1. Never live your life based entirely on other people's expectations.
Your parents, friends, and society may have a picture of what your life should look like. But you are the one who has to live it. Listen to advice, but learn to make decisions that align with your values and goals.
2. Never compare your journey to someone else's.
Someone is getting married while you are searching for a job. Someone is buying a house while you are still trying to pay your bills. Someone is travelling abroad while you are figuring out your next step.
Life is not a competition. You don't know what someone else had to sacrifice to get where they are, and they don't know what your journey looks like either.
3. Never spend money just to impress people.
Don't go broke trying to look rich. Don't buy things you cannot afford because you want people to think you are successful.
Learn to save. Learn to budget. Learn to live within your means. Financial discipline will take you much further than appearances.
4. Never stop learning.
Your degree is not the end of your education. The world keeps changing, and you need to keep changing with it.
Read. Take courses. Learn a skill. Ask questions. Be curious. The more valuable skills you develop, the more opportunities you create for yourself.
5. Never stay in a relationship that constantly destroys your peace.
Love is important, but love should not require you to lose yourself completely. Whether it is a friendship or romantic relationship, pay attention to how people treat you.
You deserve relationships where there is respect, honesty, and mutual effort.
6. Never be too proud to start small.
Your first job may not be your dream job. Your first business may be tiny. Your first salary may not be impressive.
That's okay.
Most successful journeys begin with something that looks insignificant. Don't despise small beginnings. Learn, grow, and keep moving.
7. Never ignore your health.
When you're young, it is easy to think you have unlimited time and energy. You don't.
Take care of your body. Get enough rest. Eat properly. Exercise when you can. Pay attention to your mental and emotional wellbeing.
Your future self will thank you.
8. Never let fear make every decision for you.
You may be afraid of failing. You may be afraid of what people will say. You may be afraid that you are not good enough.
But sometimes, you have to try anyway.
You will not always get it right, but you will learn something from trying. Regret can be heavier than failure.
9. Never forget the people who supported you when you had nothing.
As you grow, your circle may change. You may meet new people and enter new environments. But don't become so successful that you forget the people who stood beside you when your life was still a work in progress.
Success means little if you lose your sense of gratitude along the way.
10. Never believe that you are running out of time.
This may be the most important one.
You are allowed to be confused. You are allowed to change your mind. You are allowed to start again. You are allowed to take a different path.
Your twenties are not a deadline for becoming everything you will ever be.
Take your time. Make mistakes. Learn from them. Build yourself. Become someone you are proud of.
You don't have to have your entire life figured out today.
You just have to keep moving forward.
