Three members of the All Progressives Congress APC from Ogbadigbo Local Government Area of Benue State have lost their lives in a fatal road accident while travelling to attend the party’s zonal congress in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
The victims were part of a delegation of party faithful heading to the North Central zonal congress when their vehicle was involved in a crash along the Makurdi–Lafia expressway. The journey, meant to strengthen the party’s internal democracy and regional structures, ended in tragedy for the Ogbadigbo contingent.
Details of the crash remain sketchy, but eyewitnesses along the busy highway reported that the vehicle conveying the APC members suddenly veered off the road after what appeared to be a loss of control. Other motorists and passersby were said to have rushed to the scene to assist before emergency responders arrived.
The State Organising Secretary of the APC, James Ornguga, confirmed the incident and the deaths of the three party members. He explained that several others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were immediately evacuated to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital BSUTH in Makurdi for treatment.
Yes, we lost three of our members from Ogbadigbo, while others were injured and are receiving treatment at BSU Teaching Hospital Ornguga said, describing the incident as a heavy blow to the party and to the affected communities.
Party officials and sympathisers have been trooping to the hospital to visit the injured and to offer support to their families. There were indications that the party leadership in Benue State was making arrangements to identify the deceased formally and contact their next of kin.
The accident has thrown Ogbadigbo and the wider APC family in Benue into mourning, with local leaders describing the deceased as committed grassroots mobilisers who were deeply involved in party activities. Community members say the loss will be felt not only within political circles but also in their home communities where they were known for active participation in social and religious affairs.
Authorities are expected to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the crash, amid renewed concerns over the safety of political delegations travelling on major highways for party activities and elections.
