Former Senate President Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has paid tribute to the late Chief Imam of Ilorin, Sheikh (Dr.) Muhammad Bashir Salihu, describing his death as a profound loss to Ilorin, Kwara State, and the broader Muslim community. Sheikh Salihu, who passed away at the age of 75, was widely respected as a spiritual leader and Islamic scholar whose life was dedicated to faith, learning and service to humanity. Saraki said the news of his passing was received with deep sorrow and a personal sense of loss.
In a statement issued by his office, Saraki highlighted the late cleric’s long tenure on the pulpit — spanning more than four decades — and noted that his influence extended beyond the Ilorin Emirate to touch countless lives through guidance, mentorship and example. He described Sheikh Salihu as an institution in his own right, whose sermons consistently emphasized peace, discipline, unity and communal harmony, helping to strengthen Ilorin’s reputation as a centre of Islamic learning.
Saraki also reflected on the personal relationship he shared with the late Chief Imam, recalling his counsel, prayers and moral support during pivotal moments in his public service. He extended heartfelt condolences to the Emir of Ilorin, the family of the deceased, and the Muslim ummah, and prayed that the legacy of scholarship, humility and devotion left behind would continue to inspire future generations.
