Nigerian Army Launches Search And Rescue Operation For Kidnap Victim In Aba - 3 days ago

The Nigerian Army has mounted a major search and rescue operation in Abia State after a kidnap victim, 40-year-old Mr Bright Ochinachi, escaped from his captors and alerted troops deployed along the Umuahia–Aba corridor.

Ochinachi was reportedly abducted by unidentified gunmen along the busy highway linking the Abia State capital, Umuahia, to the commercial hub of Aba, a route that residents say has become increasingly notorious for armed attacks and abductions. His vehicle was also seized during the incident.

After days in captivity, Ochinachi managed to escape from what he described as a makeshift camp deep inside the bush. Disoriented but determined, he made his way to the nearest security post, where he encountered soldiers of the 14 Brigade, Nigerian Army, operating in the Isiala Ngwa axis.

Army authorities said his report triggered an immediate response. Troops, guided by the victim, launched a coordinated operation into the surrounding forests, focusing on the Uratta and Umuchima general areas, believed to be used as hideouts and transit routes by criminal gangs.

Military sources explained that the operation involves ground troops conducting systematic sweeps of the forest, supported by intelligence gathering from local communities. The primary objectives are to track down the kidnappers, dismantle their camps, and recover Ochinachi’s stolen vehicle, while also searching for any other possible victims still in captivity.

The Army has framed the incident as part of a wider security challenge confronting parts of South-Eastern Nigeria, where criminal groups have exploited difficult terrain and strained policing resources to stage kidnappings, robberies, and attacks on motorists.

Security officials in Abia say the latest operation is intended not only to apprehend the perpetrators but also to send a clear signal that the Umuahia–Aba corridor will not be allowed to become a safe haven for kidnappers. Patrols along the route have reportedly been intensified, with more checkpoints and random stop-and-search operations introduced.

Residents and commuters have been urged to remain vigilant, avoid travelling late at night where possible, and promptly report suspicious movements or unfamiliar faces in their communities. The Army has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the region and called for closer cooperation between security agencies, local leaders, and the public as efforts continue to secure the highway and surrounding communities.
