ABU Bush Strokes, Books, and Crafts Fair Ignites Creativity and Artistic Expression at Love Garden
The ABU Bush Strokes, Books, and Crafts Fair (Paper Thought Exhibition) transformed Ahmadu Bello University’s Love Garden into a vibrant hub of artistic expression on 25th and 26th of July,2025.
The event, organized by Paper thought, encouraged students and attendees to engage in hands-on craft work, poetry, and visual arts, breaking the myth that art is exclusive to a select few.
In an interview with the founder of the Paper Thought shared that the vision was to “get people to actually get their hands dirty and engage in craft work.” The exhibition aimed to democratize art, proving that “art is for everybody” and a medium for self-expression. However, the founder noted that lack of funding was a major challenge, limiting the event’s potential. “If we have sponsors for upcoming events, we are going to blow your minds!” they promised.
Darif Tolu Oluwaseyi, a visual artist and part-time creator, showcased a unique piece inspired by "intiply"—a fading Eastern Nigerian love language. Titled "Through Love Lies," the artwork used rare symbols to convey that “you shouldn’t love someone unless you see them as you see yourself.”
Oluwaseyi revealed that while art comes naturally to her, studying it professionally at ABU introduced challenges in balancing imagination with technical rules.
Daud, a Chemical Engineering student and a writer shared his passion for storytelling, inspired by the idea that “you could live multiple lives as a writer.” His poems often explore dark, layered themes, and he advised upcoming writers to “be yourself and be creative.”
The fair succeeded in fostering creativity, but organizers hope for more sponsorship to elevate future editions. For now, the event stands as a testament to the power of art in bridging cultures, languages, and personal expression within Nigeria’s academic and diaspora communities.
