FCT Police Probe Death Of Pregnant Woman After Street Fight - 4 days ago

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has opened an investigation into a suspected case of culpable homicide following the death of a heavily pregnant woman, identified as Alice, after a physical altercation with another woman, Grace Kasimu, in Abuja.

According to preliminary police findings, the confrontation between the two women escalated into a fight during which Alice, who was in the late stages of pregnancy, reportedly suffered complications. Witnesses told investigators that she began bleeding shortly after the altercation and collapsed.

Neighbours and bystanders rushed her to Wuse General Hospital in Abuja in an attempt to save her life. Medical personnel at the facility confirmed that both Alice and her unborn child were dead on arrival, prompting an immediate notification of the police.

Spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed that the alleged assailant, identified as Grace Kasimu, has been arrested and is currently in police custody. She said the case is being treated as a suspected culpable homicide, pending the outcome of a full investigation.

Adeh explained that detectives have begun taking statements from witnesses and family members, as well as securing medical reports from the hospital to establish the exact cause of death and the sequence of events leading up to it.

She added that the Commissioner of Police has ordered that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a more detailed and professional inquiry. The SCID is expected to conduct forensic and medical reviews, and to determine whether there was intent, negligence or any aggravating factors in the confrontation.

The incident has sparked concern among residents over rising cases of violent disputes that quickly turn deadly, especially involving vulnerable persons such as pregnant women. Community leaders are urging residents to seek non-violent means of resolving disagreements and to involve authorities early when tensions escalate.

The FCT Police Command has appealed to members of the public who may have additional information about the incident to come forward and assist investigators. The outcome of the investigation will guide possible charges against the suspect and any other persons found to have played a role in the events that led to Alice’s death.
