I've read quite a number of books this year, ranging from African literature to foreign self-help books. Here’s a breakdown of everything I’ve read and what I thought about them.
Note: These are just my personal opinions about the books. Everyone is welcome to have their own thoughts! So yeah, let’s get into it. Hope you enjoy! 😉
1. Maame by Jessica George
Y’all, when I say I have never related to a book this much before… Let me give you a quick synopsis: “Maame” is about Maddie, a 23-year-old Ghanaian woman still living with her father, who has Parkinson’s disease. The book explores how she navigates life after her father's death, meets new people, discovers herself, and breaks out of her people-pleasing habits.
I really liked this book because it highlights the impact of placing too much responsibility on children and how it shapes their self-perception and relationships with others. It also showcases how, in many African cultures, we often dismiss mental health and underestimate the importance of attachment in early childhood. The story shows how we internalize certain expectations that our parents or primary caregivers ingrain in us—like in Maddie’s case, where she was always called "Maame," which means "Mother" in Twi. This name came with certain subconscious responsibilities and baggage. It also touches on the taboo around discussing personal issues with people outside the family, making it hard for some to share and connect with others.
What I loved most was how Maddie gradually broke out of her shell, tried new things, and recognized the importance of mental health and self-esteem. I also liked how she eventually stood up to her mother and brother.
Favorite Character:Shu, hands down! She was so badass. I loved how she handled Ben and always made time for Maddie. I liked Nia too, but there was something about Shu that just stood out to me.
Least Favorite Character: Do I even need to say it? Obviously, that sleazy, cheating Ben. Not only did he cheat, but he also didn’t care about Maddie’s sexual experience—no aftercare, nothing. And his reaction when she mentioned she was on the pill? Ugh. Ben is the perfect example of a Lagos boy.
Favorite Quote:Maddie’s thoughts on why she hated being called "Maame":
“It made me grow up when I should have had more time. It made my dad overlook me when I was a child, my mum leave me behind, and my brother get away with doing the bare minimum. It made me lonely and it made me sad. It made me responsible and guilty.”
Rating:9.5/10
Thanks for reading my thoughts on the book! I think I’ll make this a series. Abeg, this is my first time writing something like this, so please be gentle with the criticism!
Comment below if you've read it, I’d like to know your thoughts on the book :)
