Operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Zone 12, Bauchi, have intercepted a dangerously overloaded commercial vehicle on the Bauchi–Kari road, under the Darazo Unit Command, after discovering passengers perched on top of a high stack of goods.

The vehicle, a long-distance commercial transporter, was reportedly heading towards northern communities when patrol teams flagged it down. Photographs taken at the scene showed men, women and youths sitting on luggage and merchandise strapped to the roof, with no protective railings or restraints.

The Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, said in an official statement that the configuration of the vehicle amounted to reckless endangerment of human life and a clear violation of national road safety regulations. He described the situation as a grave safety breach, noting that the exposed passengers would have stood little chance of survival in the event of a crash, sudden braking or tyre burst.

According to Ohaeri, overloading is not a minor traffic infraction but a life-threatening decision with potentially fatal consequences. He explained that excessive weight compromises vehicle stability, lengthens stopping distance and makes it harder for drivers to maintain control, especially on highways with mixed traffic and uneven surfaces.

He warned that such practices significantly increase the likelihood of rollovers and high-impact collisions, putting not only those on board at risk but also other road users, including motorists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.

Ohaeri urged commercial drivers, fleet operators and private vehicle owners to adhere strictly to prescribed loading limits and passenger capacities. He stressed that human beings must never be treated as cargo or used to balance loads on top of vehicles, regardless of economic pressures or travel demand.

The corps, he added, will intensify nationwide enforcement against overloading and related violations, deploying more patrols and surveillance along major corridors such as the Bauchi–Kari route. He said the FRSC remains committed to reducing road traffic crashes, injuries and deaths through a combination of enforcement, public education and collaboration with transport unions and community leaders.

The intercepted vehicle was impounded at the Darazo Unit Command, while the passengers were ordered to disembark and continue their journey only under safer conditions. The driver is expected to face sanctions in line with existing traffic laws and FRSC regulations.
